Faroe Cliffs Loop

Intermediate

Faroe Islands · Vagar

The Faroe Islands do not revolve around one famous thru-hike, but they are hugely popular in global search and photography circles. By linking the best Vagar-area trails into a two-day loop-style itinerary, you get dramatic cliffs, turf-covered slopes, and North Atlantic village scenery in a compact package.

Highlights

  • You see the Faroe Islands' signature cliff scenery very quickly
  • Constant weather changes make the same coast look different hour by hour
  • Easy to combine with a road trip rather than a long expedition
  • Seabirds, oceanfalls, and high fjord views are exceptionally photogenic

Suitable For

  • Hikers who want short routes with huge scenery
  • Photography-focused travellers
  • Sea-cliff landscape lovers

Important Notes

  • Strong wind and wet grass can make the route much more serious than the distance suggests
  • Some Faroese trails cross private land or require local access fees
  • Fog reduces visibility quickly, and cliff edges demand strict caution

Getting There

A rental car from Torshavn or the airport is the easiest approach. Multi-trail combinations around Vagar, Bour, and Gasadalur create a strong two-day sea-cliff itinerary.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Focus on the Gasadalur and Mulafossur coastal high-ground walks.
  2. Day 2: Combine Bour, Sorvagsvatn, and nearby viewpoints for a full sea-cliff finale.

Season & Permit Notes

Season notes: Summer and early autumn are the most workable windows, though Faroese weather is volatile year-round.

Permits: There is no single permit, but some local trails involve fees or access rules on private land.

Supplies & Accommodation

Supplies: Villages and towns provide resupply, but the trails themselves have almost no facilities, so carry a full day's food and water.

Accommodation: Staying on Vagar or near the airport is the simplest option, especially with a car.
