  • Starts from Lago di Braies and enters the Dolomites' signature towers and walls quickly
  • Rifugio culture makes the hike both comfortable and social
  • The Lagazuoi zone adds remarkable World War I history

Important Notes

  • Summer hut bookings are extremely competitive
  • Loose rock and steep descents require care after rain or fresh snow
  • The route is not highly technical but accumulates significant daily climbing
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Alps, so early starts are important

Getting There

Fly into Venice or Milan, travel to Cortina d'Ampezzo, then connect to Lago di Braies to start. Exit by bus from La Pissa.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Use the first two days from Lago di Braies to settle into the pace and hut rhythm of the Dolomites.
  2. Middle stages focus on the iconic Cinque Torri and Lagazuoi areas, where stage length can be adjusted for weather and fitness.
  3. Finish by trending south toward Belluno and completing the full classic traverse.

Season & Permit Notes

Season notes: The prime season is July to September. June can still hold snow, and some rifugios begin closing by late September.

Permits: There is usually no single trail permit, but rifugio reservations are effectively essential in summer.

Supplies & Accommodation

Supplies: Most walkers rely on rifugio meals and carry only snacks and water during the day. A few longer sections justify extra food planning.

Accommodation: The standard approach is hut-to-hut travel using rifugios, ranging from basic dorms to relatively comfortable alpine lodges.
